What's for Dinner? Breakfast

eHow of the Day

Breakfast has come a long way from those lean years when early man rolled out of his cave and ate the first thing that didn't eat him. It has evolved through Napoleon's purported discovery of the omelet as his army rested near the French town of Bessieres and Kafka's reference in "The Metamorphosis" to the morning repast as "the most important meal of the day." Breakfast has always been there for us, bearing its comfort and carbohydrates. Whether it's syrup-laden, soaked in milk or saddled with sizzling meat or hash browns, it has become a meal that defies the restrictions of the traditional time slot, as well as one that always seems to come with a side of guilt. No more. Breakfast doesn't have to be a carb-loaded, early-morning fat delivery system overseen by an overbearing, anthropomorphized bottle of high-fructose corn syrup. Child Care When You Can't Be There

eHow of the Day

Julie Wells, a St. Louis mother of two, removed her son from a day care when staff members fed him snacks made from peanut products despite his peanut allergy. "They knew about his allergy, and I even packed his own snacks," Well said. "But they were too lazy to get them out." Unfortunately, Wells' story isn't unique. Hamann, director of Lilypad Learning Center in Collinsville, Ill., and mother of three, decided to open her own center after hearing numerous such horror stories. One mother told her that a center wasn't feeding her child adequate portions. Still another complained of irregular diaper changes, Hamann recalled. "One 18-month-old child was kicked out of a day care because he was biting," she said. "While we don't want children biting, as day care providers we have to realize that this is natural and normal -- you have to find a way to help the child find another way to express himself. But child care outside of the home is often an unavoidable option when work and financial responsibilities loom. While worst-case, or even simply bad-case, scenarios abound,… Keep reading…

How to Use Neti Pots

eHow of the Day

Recurring sinus infections and severe allergies can cause headaches, facial pressure and post-nasal drip. If you suffer from chronic sinus problems, it may help to irrigate your sinuses with a saltwater solution. One way of flushing your sinuses is with a neti pot, which resembles a small genie lamp. When used properly, this small, ceramic pot thins mucus and flushes out environmental contaminants, bacteria and allergens. Using a saline rinse solution also reduces inflammation and helps reactivate filtering cilia in the nose. Keep reading…
